Stop hiring "corporate sharks" and calling them A-players.

Corporate Psychology, Behaviour & Meta‑Skills•3 min read•July 2026

True high performers aren't internally combative. They don’t spend their energy managing optics, defending territory, bringing in under-performing colleagues or playing political games.

The actual profile of an executive A-player looks like this:

  • Driven by impact and not attention. They care about the scoreboard and not who receives the applause.
  • Motivated intrinsically. They get a kick out of solving complex problems, not outlasting rivals.
  • Collaborative by default. They see talent in others as leverage to scale and an opportunity to learn, never as a threat.

The catch?

If a leadership team is used to a culture of defensive B-players, they will often mistake an A-player's speed and directness for arrogance, and sometimes a lack of self-management.

In this situation, they will reject the exact person the business actually needs.

Are you hiring high performers, or are you accidentally protecting empires?

Stop hiring "corporate sharks" and calling them A-players.
